If riding your bike for 500 miles seems hard, Steve Shoultz, the owner of Priority Risk Management in South Bend, makes it look easy. He says that he rides his bike almost everyday, “I’ll ride twenty to forty miles after work and then I’ll ride forty to eighty miles on the weekend.”
Shoultz is riding in this years RAGBRAI, which stands for Register Annual Great Bike Ride Across Iowa. It’s a 500-mile bike ride from July 23-29. It’s Shoultz’s second year on the ride. He says it was a fun time last year, “I can unplug. You can’t reach me, the cell towers get swarmed with all of the people."
Shoultz is not nervous for the ride, “I was last year,” he says, “because I made it I feel like I can do it again this year.”
He has some tips for those of us who worry about our bike riding stamina, “when you get tired on the bike, there’s always a yard to lay down in.”
This year, he’s raising money for the Diabetes Research Foundation while on his 500-mile bike ride. He says that he has a personal connection, “I started riding ten years ago because I was pre-diabetic, so I’m trying to fight off diabetes.”
He’s looking for donations. His goal? $2,000. Shoultz says that he’s donating too, “I’m matching dollar to dollar for contributions up to $1,000.”
He says that it’s important to give back, “diabetes affects almost every family in America… I’d like to help get rid of it.”
